Dogs on Hilton Head Island Beaches

All Hilton Head Island beaches are dog-friendly, but rules vary by season and time of day. Dogs must always be leashed or under positive voice control when permitted. Owners are required to clean up and properly dispose of all pet waste. Service animals are permitted but must follow the same leash and control requirements.

Dogs are not allowed at any time in designated Animal Prohibited Areas — look for “Animals Prohibited Area” signage. Violations may result in fines or removal of the animal by authorities.

Note: As part of the 2025–2026 Beach Renourishment Project permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, a restricted area near Fish Haul Creek is off-limits to dogs year-round to protect threatened shorebird species. This area is approximately the size of two football fields, about 600 feet from the Fish Haul Beach public access point, and does not affect any other beach areas. See hiltonheadislandsc.gov for details and maps.
